AGLA WL12 Playoffs
January 30, 2012 in AGLA, AGLA News by TrueFlyingCow
Greetings sportsfans! The regular season has come to an end, and we’re ready to welcome teams into the postseason! These teams will be playing through a bracket to determine the champions. This season, thanks to the performance of the ads and our amazon partnership, each active member of the championship team will receive a prize of 800 microsoft points.
But first, a word on how these teams were selected. Each of the division winners automatically receives one of the top 7 seeds, and these teams are then sorted by their win % of games played followed by goals per game. The top seeds were very close – the difference from the 1st seed to second seed, and second seed to third was just 1 goal each. For the other teams, since we combined the amateur and pro leagues we wanted playoffs to be more inclusive than last season. To accomplish this, teams with at least 50% win-loss record, including forfeits, made the playoffs. Once we had all those teams selected, they were seeded based on their win % of games played with GPG as the tiebreaker. This led to a playoff bracket composed of 21 teams. So, here are the teams making playoffs:
[table "5" not found /]And here is the bracket:
Each round is a best of 3 series. Neutral host is optional but encouraged where possible. The deadline for the first round games is next Tuesday, Feb 7, 2012. If you don’t have a first round match you are free to schedule and play the next round as soon as your opponent is determined. Games are reported on the same page as the regular season. Gametypes and maps are the same, except you need to use the Bloody Neutral Grifball to handle a neutral host and/or streamer (files can be found here). Save your films and make some highlight clips if you do something cool. Contact an admin if you’ve got any questions. You can also find the bracket and team rosters on the playoffs page. Goodluck!

Hey TFC, if games later on are being streamed can you post the time/link on the front page of grifball.info? Dunno if games are actually gonna be streamed but if so that would be cool
Yep. Don’t know how often somebody with streaming ability will be around for games, but if people let me know a bit ahead of time I’d definitely be able to post it around a few places.
We should be ahead of lvl 50 because head to head matches we won 6-3 they won 5-4, its not our fault that forfeit factors allowed them to play 1 extra game than us. we even had more GPG. Actually we should be before zero logic because of GPG, forfeit wins wouldn’t count against teams because not their fault the teams didnt show up it goes record then GPG.
It clearly shows we have 2nd best gpg for 9-1 teams. If you look at the first and second seed they have more forfeit wins than the 3rd seed? You are justifying teams by popularity not by a set rule. Your system is flawed and you’re changing a system that has been used for seasons and seasons.
Chill out, seeding isn’t that important.
But if they were… your line of reasoning is flawed regarding Zero Logic, they clearly are the second seeded 9-1 team because they only have 1 forfeit win.
It seems the seeding is weighted on record and then a mixture of gpg and how many forfeit wins you have, and 1 forfeit and a 6.2 is better than 6 forfeits and a 6.5.
@p1mp1nthacr1b Does it honestly matter what seed you are? Your team is going to lose to NYP or my team anyway.
+1 Ditto
…even though I do also agree that it should go: Record, GPG, then lesser forfeit wins.
We did use record then GPG. In most professional sports, record is a pretty simple comparison because all teams play the same number of games. But we’re weird here, and all the teams are playing different numbers of games over the season. So, to equalize that, we took the percentage of games a team won as their record. When teams had the same win %, GPG was the tiebreaker. We had some really close GPG tiebreakers, but nobody had the same win % and same GPG so we didn’t need a third tiebreaker. But if we did it would’ve been total wins (fewer forfeit wins).
I thought I had explained this in that paragraph between the picture and list of seeds, but maybe not. I mostly wrote this here to see how deeply nested these replies can go.
